SurSur, grillo in Arabic (in English cricket), is Donnafugata’s new single variety wine, the result of their research and commitment to the autochthonous Sicilian varieties. Made with Grillo grapes, it is a crisp and pleasant wine to enjoy with friends.
Type: Grillo Sicilia Dop.
Grapes: Grillo
Production area: Western Sicily, in the hilly hinterland between Marsala and Salemi.
Altitude: 100 to 200 m AMSL
Orography: hilly.
Soils: silty clay loam, with a sub-alkaline reaction (pH 7.5- 8). Total limestone from 25 to 30%. Rich in nutritive elements (potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc).
VINEYARD
Training and pruning: VSP (vertical shoot positioning), with Guyot pruning, leaving 6 to 10 buds per plant.
Planting densities: 3,500 to 4,500 plants per hectare.
Yield per hectare: about 8 tons.
2012 Vintage: the 2012 vintage was slightly warmer than the seasonal averages, although it was characterized by normal climatic trends. The rainfall was concentrated in spring, but altogether in 2012 there was less rainfall than in the last ten years, with yields that were slightly lower than average.
The harvesting of the Grillo grapes for the production of SurSur began at the end of August: a quality vintage that has given rise to a fresh and fragrant white wine.
CELLAR
Fermentation: in stainless steel at a controlled temperature.
Aging: in cement vats for a few months, and at least two months in the bottle before being released onto the market.
Analysis data: alcohol 12.90 % ABV - total acidity 5.3 g/l - pH 3.22
TASTING NOTES
Description (15/01/2011): brilliant straw yellow, it offers a crisp and fruity nose, with notes of white peaches and grapefruits combined with hints of aromatic herbs. An ample and clean palate, with perfectly integrated savory notes and delicate softness.
Aging potential: to be enjoyed within 3-4 years.
THE WINE EXPERIENCE
Food & Wine: it matches perfectly with seafood appetizers, vegetarian first courses and roast fish. Serve in tulip glasses of medium size and height, it can be uncorked at time of serving, excellent at 9–11°C.
Occasions: SurSur, to enjoy with friends, we recommend it for an aperitif or your gourmet picnics.
Art & Wine: Grillo is an ancient autochthonous variety from Sicily, but it is also a cute little animal (the
cricket) that brings good luck. The name sur sur , that means cricket, comes from the Arabic language which was once also spoken in Sicily. The voice of spring, with its scents and colors, is depicted on the label. It shows Gabriella as a girl in flight, running barefoot through the flowers and fresh grass, following the singing of crickets that sounds sweet to her ears, like a thousand “SurSur… ".
